Meeting highlights:

1. Getting the most out of Safety Delta as a human performance tool

We encourage clients to get familiar with the Safety Delta system and actively participate in it. Here are some tips:

Run the survey during ‘normal’ operation
Stressful times or long downtimes can affect the crew’s answers. Conducting the Crew Safety Diagnosis (CSD) survey during a ‘normal’ operation helps ensure the results reflect the typical working conditions and performance on board.
Understand the context
Performance is influenced by various factors, such as crew nationality mix and stress levels. So, low scores in the CSD report don’t always indicate poor performance; they may reflect conditions affecting the crew's ability to perform.
Don't benchmark
Safety Delta is not about comparing vessels; it’s about catching the unique conditions on board. Different ships, different situations!
Focus on the spread, not the scores
The interesting part in the report is the grey bar or the ‘spread’. What you want to look at is how far the ranks are away from each other, and how much they are aligned or not. Wide spreads indicate huge perception gaps among the crew, which you need to address in the dialogue.

2. Supporting PIFs in SIRE 2.0 / RightShip inspections or Rio Tinto’s DOOS

Mayuresh Jayade, HSSEQ Manager at BergeBulk, shared that the fleet was well-prepared for Rio Tinto due to prior familiarity with Safety Delta. While this head start is great, challenges remain. The Master Coach program will be instrumental in guiding the transition, and active office involvement is crucial for driving effective dialogues.

Performance-focused culture
Rio Tinto’s DOOS follows the same ideas as Safety Delta, aiming to bridge the gap between ‘work as imagined’ (ideal procedures) and ‘work as done’ (reality on board).
Performance influencing factors (PIFs)
DOOS will focus on psychological safety, mental health and crew well-being, and leadership on board.
SIRE 2.0
We have added five new safety areas related to OCIMF’s five pillars of human factors.

3. Maximising Safety Delta’s value in inspections

The following are insights from Michael Sandberg, Marine Standard Manager at Uni-Tankers:

Opportunity to speak for everyone
Safety Delta creates a platform where crew members, regardless of rank, have the chance to share their perspectives.

Combining Safety Delta with SIRE 2.0 provides a way for ratings to express their genuine views rather than what inspectors or the company might expect.

Trial inspections as indicators
The trial inspections may not give a complete picture of the real SIRE 2.0. The initial results should be viewed as indicators of the current state and areas that need improvement.

4. Appraisal system as a human performance tool

We have developed a new appraisal system with the following key features:

Forward-looking approach
The system emphasises individual growth and development rather than just past performance.
Complementary to existing systems
The system can supplement existing appraisal frameworks while providing flexibility in how data is shared with clients.
Focus on behaviours
The system emphasises the importance of observing and evaluating all types of behaviours, not just safety-related ones. This provides a more holistic view of an individual's performance and potential.

5. Performance Delta – the Delta method in operational performance

We are transitioning from Safety Delta to Performance Delta, and here are the key aspects:

Free
There is no additional cost for existing clients.
New safety areas
Psychological Safety, Health and Well-being, Emerging Situations, Collaborative Leadership, and Performance Cycles
Human performance focus
One of the guiding principles behind Performance Delta is what we call the 5 Pillars of Human Performance.
Psychological safety
This concept is highlighted as crucial for resilience in stressful situations, requiring trust, openness, and effective communication among the crew.
More involvement from the shore side
Kim Green, HSSEQ Manager at Ugland, raised a very good question, asking what more can the shore team do to support Safety Delta and build the right culture after the kick-off. Well, some clients have approached us to develop a shore-based Safety Delta for them. Uni-Tankers is one example, with Michael Sandberg pointing out that when both the ship and shore teams work together, it shows the seafarers they’re not in it alone – and everyone benefits from the results.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this insightful meeting! We’re eager to welcome more participants in our next session and collaborate on ways to enhance safety and performance together. Stay tuned for details on our next networking meeting!
